K and I were riding in the car the other day, on the way to her rehearsal. She'd negotiated to bring her iPod and was playing UNO.
"If it looks like I'm not gonna win, I just start over," she said.
"If you can't lose, you can't win," I said.
"Yes you can," she insisted, continuing, "I get bonus prizes and points when I win."
I said, "Yeah, but winning is defined in opposition to losing, so if you can't lose, you really aren't winning. It's like how you can't have a left without a right."
"Sure you can," she said. If my right hand wasn't there, I could still have a left."
"Yeah," I said, but it wouldn't be left of anything if there were no right."
"Mom," she said,"... If you're trying to teach me something, it's just not working."
