Sum-sum-summertime

K began summer camp this week... 5 days a week of 8:30-11:30 a.m. kid fun at a local Montessori school with a big emphasis on nature exploration!

I'll admit, I was a little concerned... more about myself than K. How would I manage her being gone 3 hours a day?! And, of course, the paranoid freak in me wondered how she'd possibly get along without my continuous oversight!

Nevertheless, off she went, with a stream of dialog to her teachers from the moment they claimed her from me in the morning on Monday.

The first day, she was crying when they returned her... apparently she'd been unhappy to have to STOP playing... and, I later found out, some mean boy had called her the "b" word while she was playing alone in a sandbox... that's right... a "baby." That's the ultimate insult to a girl of 3 1/2! I coached her to ask him, "Are you mean or just stupid?" should he happen to criticize her again, but she told me she was going to take the high road and "just walk away" or "tell him that he shouldn't say that to me" if he said it again.

Yesterday, she had some sand in her sandals and had to be bargained with to keep them on until she got back to me, according to the teacher, but no further "incidents" with the mean kid.

Today, she bounded into the car and told me, "Mom! We saw a hummingbird! It was getting nectar from the bee balm!" Wow, I was impressed. Until recently, I wouldn't even have been able to identify bee balm myself! As we drove home, I asked her what she wanted to eat for lunch. "What would be good for you, Mom?," she asked. I said, "well, we've got the usual - peanut butter, or we could have egg, or cheese, or egg and cheese, or egg and turkey and cheese..." "I think I'll have the usual," she responded... adding "Good old peanut butter!"

I love to hear her school stories of new discoveries, new friends, new kinds of fun. I can also already see it's bringing with it a newfound independence, too. That's a little harder to take - like she's aging months in just days. But it's all good. She's a wonder! Now I'm just wondering if the class I've enrolled her in for next year is going to be below her level, since she's exploring so much and already reading. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. As long as she's having fun, that's all that really matters anyway... and she's DEFINITELY having Fun!
